Acupuncture for Muscle and Joint Concerns
At Victoria East Chiropractic Clinic, acupuncture is provided by Dr. Sylvianne Poirier.
Our approach focuses on muscles, joints and related musculoskeletal concerns. It differs from traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture because treatment is based on a chiropractic assessment and is directed toward the area causing pain or affecting movement.
What Is Chiropractic Acupuncture?
Chiropractic acupuncture involves inserting very fine, sterile, single-use needles into carefully selected areas of the body. Electro-acupuncture may also be used in treatment. Electro-acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that combines acupuncture needling with a gentle electrical current, similar to a Dr. Ho machine or TENS unit.
Needles are placed based on the patient’s symptoms, anatomy, and areas of muscle tension or tenderness.
Before treatment, Dr. Poirier will review your health history, assess your concern and explain whether acupuncture may be appropriate for you. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before providing consent.
During treatment, you may feel a brief pinch, pressure, heaviness or muscle twitch when a needle is inserted. Some people experience temporary tenderness, minor bruising or fatigue afterward.
Please tell Dr. Poirier if you:
- Are pregnant or may be pregnant
- Take blood-thinning medication
- Have a bleeding disorder
- Have a skin infection near the treatment area
- Have previously fainted around needles
- Have any concerns about acupuncture
Continue taking prescribed medication unless the healthcare provider who prescribed it tells you otherwise.
