Massage Therapy is one of the oldest health care practices, dating back to uses in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, India, and China, more than 3000 years ago. Early in the 19th century, Per Henrik Ling of Stockholm, Sweden, created the basis for the system many RMTs learn from today. While most practitioners are still trained in basic Swedish technique, there are many other musculoskeletal and myofascial techniques that have developed and been added into the practice over the years. In Canada, the formal integration of massage therapy into healthcare came during World War I. The military trained nurses in massage techniques to aid injured soldiers in their rehabilitation efforts.
Today, Massage Therapy is used for a wide range of medical conditions, including but not limited to occupational stresses, muscular overuse, and many chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis, headaches, and sciatica. It is the manipulation of soft tissues in the body – muscles, connective tissues, tendons, and ligaments. It helps to decrease pain, improve range of motion, aids blood and lymphatic flow, and reduces muscle and joint soreness.

Applications
Through the Life Span
Anyone can receive massage therapy. Physical touch has been found to benefit our mental and physical health, notably around sleep, heart rate, mood, blood pressure, pain, and fatigue. It is beneficial for children experiencing soreness from their sports or through their growth spurts. It helps students relieve stress caused by studying in awkward positions for hours. It aids workers who have both physical and sedentary jobs. It helps encourage muscle tone and blood circulation in the elderly.
On the Job
Whether one has a physical or sedentary job, one is always using their muscles. From slouching at the computer desk, to working above the head, to gardening, to shovelling, muscles get a workout every day. Massage can help decrease stress and tension that may arise from their jobs. Many companies offer benefits packages that include massage therapy coverage.
Sport
Massage therapy has been shown to be effective for athletes of all levels of participation and ability. It has been researched to see if it helps to increase range of motion in various joints. It can help athletes improve sports performance, prevent injury, aid in injury recovery, and helps contribute to an overall level of health and wellbeing.
Prenatal and Postnatal Care
Receiving Massage Therapy during pregnancy is both safe and beneficial. It helps treat the discomfort and stress of pregnancy associated with the changes the body experiences such as low back pain, hip pain, or shoulder pain. Our clinic offers massage pillows designed for pregnant clients to lay comfortably on their fronts while getting massaged. Alternatively, side lying is an option for the expecting parent who is hesitant to lay on their front. Please let your massage therapist know if you are pregnant so that we may support you properly.
